Summary: This is an entry-level class within the HVAC Mechanic series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the HVAC Mechanic-II by the performance of more routine tasks and semi-skilled duties including the repair and replacement of electrical parts. As this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor, performs semi-skilled and technical work involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning equipment and systems.
Essential Duties: - Assists in repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation, evaporative cooling and air conditioning tasks involved in the replacement and repair of valves, fans, motors, gaskets, filters, belts, fuses, controls, switches, gauges, tubing and pipes.
- Assists in the inspection and testing of heating, refrigeration, evaporative cooling and air conditioning equipment and systems to insure proper functioning.
- Participates in adjusting and installing valves, thermostats, fans, pressure regulators and pumps.
- Insulates heating, refrigeration and air conditioning system pipes; cut, bend and join tubing and pipes. Repair condensate piping for various air conditioning units.
- Participates in the repair and installation of duct work and chassis covers.
- Participates in the inspection and repair of hot water and forced air heating and ventilation equipment.
- Cuts threads and assembles pipe and tubing to other components of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment including vacuum pumps, gas detectors, air compressors, meters gauges and torches.
- Perform related duties as assigned
Education and Experience: Minimum
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- One (1) years of experience in residential or commercial HVAC systems repair/ maintenance.
Desirable - HVAC Diploma, certificate or equivalent
- HVAC System monitoring and controls experience, as well as PC skills
Licensing / Certification Requirements: - N.A.T.E certification (HVAC Support Technician Certification) or ability to obtain within 6 months of starting the position
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid North Carolina Driver's license within 3 months of starting the position

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities: - Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning trade
