Job Description

The full salary range for this position is $49,500 to $69,300 per year. The expected hiring salary range for this position is $49,500 to $53,000 per year.

Human Kinetics (HK) is headquartered in Champaign, IL. This position is eligible for on-site, hybrid, or fully remote work.

Remote workers may not reside in the following locations: CA, CO, Washington, D.C., HI, MA, Montgomery County, MD, MN, NM, NY, RI, & WA.

Job Summary
As a member of the Art/Design Department, the Medical Illustrator I (MI I) is the ProdDev expert responsible for creating complex medical illustrations. They have familiarity with the anatomical and medical terminology needed to understand author instructions or ask the appropriate questions to the author in the development of complex figures. They also have knowledge of educational resources both traditional (books) and digital (software) for accessing anatomical or medical information and ensuring the accuracy of illustrations in a streamlined manner. The Medical Illustrator I also renders charts, graphs, diagrams, and other illustrations as assigned and assists in the development of new art and color palettes. The Medical Illustrator I ensures assigned projects meet the quality, budget, and schedule expectations established by the Acquisitions Editor. The Medical Illustrator I functions at a Proficient level (level I) in all aspects of the position.

Eligibility for remote work: Human Kinetics is headquartered in Champaign, IL, but this position is eligible for full-time or hybrid telecommuting.

Essential Functions
  1. Uses illustration software effectively to create art that is visually pleasing; that is consistent in terms of size, placement, perspective, and use of color; and that labels anatomical structures correctly. Ensures the same quality standards are applied by freelance artists for projects that are assigned. Learns and follows evolving accessibility guidelines for artwork, including working with current available software and scripts to ensure color accessibility standards for all newly created artwork are met.
  2. Participates in project planning with acquisition and editorial staff to determine medical illustration needs, and to establish project schedules.
  3. Carefully reviews the work of freelance medical illustrators and provides any necessary feedback about art specifications and anatomical accuracy.
  4. Makes accurate corrections to externally supplied art as assigned by the Senior Art Manager.
  5. Completes last-minute and /or emergency digital manipulations of art as needed.
  6. Notifies Senior Art Manager when each round of artwork is completed. Properly creates electronic PDF versions of art and saves PDFs to the appropriate project art folder on PubActive/Development for editorial and author review.
  7. Organizes and safely stores all art files so they are accessible to other HK staff, and adheres to the network file storage guidelines to ensure that colleagues are always working with the most current versions of artwork.
  8. Provides accurate schedule and budget estimates to Senior Art Manager and department director.
  9. Informs Senior Art Manager or department director in a timely manner about potential problems.
  10. Contributes to HK's profitability by working productively and ensuring art budgets and schedules are met. Suggests improvements to artwork processes or systems to increase efficiency.

Secondary Functions

  1. May be required to attend photoshoots for some specific projects that will include anatomical overlays and/or anatomical art created from shoot images. Acts as the anatomical expert for correct model positioning/pose for optimal outcome of these specialized illustrations. Some traveling may be required.
  2. Refers any known Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) associates, either through CMI meetings or events, to the Director, Art and Design for potential freelance work. Works with Director and Senior Art Manager to screen, test, and evaluate freelance illustrator candidates or outsource vendors in a thorough and professional manner with the goal of hiring highly qualified freelancers/vendors. For freelancers, gathers information from candidates to help HR and Finance evaluate their independent contractor status.

Job Qualifications

Minimally Required Education

Associate's degree in medical or biological illustration or related field.

Requires maintaining Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) accreditation with the Association of Medical Illustrators (AMI) or comparable industry accrediting agency.

Has developed a quality portfolio for review.

Preferred Education

Bachelor's degree in medical or biological illustration or related field.

Minimally Required Experience

Requires minimum of 2 years' experience in medical illustration or any equivalent combination of experience of training or education approved by Human Resources.

Requires knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, or comparable pixel- based program.

Experience creating charts, graphs, diagrams, and complex medical illustrations for print using Adobe Creative Suite programs.

If driving to photo shoot/ workshopping locations, has valid driver's license.

Preferred Experience

5+ years' experience in medical illustration preferred.

Knowledge of the printing process and preparing art for printing.

Working knowledge of database and word processing programs.

Job Demands

Office Equipment:  Frequent MacIntosh computer use, occasional phone/Teams calls and copier, printer, or scanner use. Rare use of a windows computer.

Mental Demands:  Frequent problem-solving, decision-making, data interpretation, organization, reading/writing, and time management skills. Rarely would supervising others be required.

Working conditions:  Indoor, office environment.

Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, typing, drawing, and seeing. Occasional walking, driving, airline travel, hearing, and speaking. Rarely will standing, lifting, or carrying be required.

As a requirement of this position, online video, phone, and text communications are expected during office hours. A home office set-up for hybrid or remote workers must be approved through Human Resources along with internet specifications/standards. Employee must be available for in-person training during the first weeks of employment (if/as needed).
